The Ensemble of Khoja-Gaukushon is one of the most significant and expansive architectural complexes in Bukhara. This ensemble includes a mosque, a minaret, and a madrasah, making it a prominent landmark in the city. Historically, the Gaukushon area was a bustling trade square in Bukhara. The name «Gaukushon» translates to «killing of bulls,» a reference to the slaughterhouse that once operated on this site.
In the 16th century, a large madrasah and mosque, accompanied by a towering minaret, were constructed on the Gaukushon square. This minaret, notable for its impressive size, is second only to the famous Kalyan Minaret in Bukhara. The construction of these structures was funded by the Djuibar sheikh Khoja Saad, whose name is reflected in the naming of the mosque and the entire ensemble.
