Kukeldash Madrassah, Bukhara

The Kukeldash Madrassah, dating back to the 16th century, is the earliest structure within the Lyabi Khauz Ensemble in Bukhara. Constructed during the reign of the Sheybanids dynasty, this madrassah stands as a testament to the architectural and educational advancements of the period.

As the largest madrassah in Bukhara, the Kukeldash Madrassah spans an impressive 80 by 60 meters. It houses over 130 hujras (cells), which accommodated more than 320 students who lived and studied within its walls. This madrassah became a symbol of the powerful state under the leadership of Abdulla-khan, reflecting the significance of education and scholarship during his rule.

The madrassah is a two-storied building, featuring a grand mosaic portal at the entrance. This portal is adorned with deep arched niches and flanked by elegant columns made of translucent green onyx at the corners. The intricate design and craftsmanship of the entrance set the tone for the architectural beauty found within.

Inside, the madrassah’s decoration is a perfect example of the «white interior» style, characterized by its pristine and elegant design. The use of white creates a sense of purity and tranquility, enhancing the spiritual and educational atmosphere of the madrassah.

Currently, the Kukeldash Madrassah is undergoing reconstruction to preserve its historical and architectural integrity. This restoration effort aims to maintain the madrassah’s status as a significant cultural and educational landmark in Bukhara.
