Adina mosque in Karshi
Adina mosque in Karshi

Located in the heart of Karshi, the Odina Madrasah and Mosque represent a significant cultural and historical landmark. This complex, built in the 16th century on the site of the demolished palace of Kebek Khan, holds the distinction of being the first educational and religious institution for women in Central Asia. The Odina complex has a rich history tied to the Sheybanid dynasty, whose rulers played a crucial role in the history of Islam in the region.

The Odina Madrasah and Mosque were constructed during the 16th century, a period marked by the flourishing of Islamic architecture and education under the Sheybanid dynasty. The madrasah served as a place where women could receive education in various sciences and religious studies, an initiative that was unprecedented in Central Asia at the time. Women from Karshi and surrounding areas came to the madrasah to learn, while the mosque provided a space for prayer and spiritual reflection, allowing women to thank Allah for their children and loved ones.

The Odina Mosque, also known as the Nasaf Katta Juma Mosque, is one of the oldest preserved cultural monuments in Karshi and the Kashkadarya region. This mosque is considered part of the architectural ensemble of Registan, located in the center of the Karshi fortress. The mosque’s historical significance is further highlighted by the fact that Amir Timur (Tamerlane), during his campaign from Samarkand to Karshi in 1385-1386, ordered its construction.

In modern times, the Odina Mosque has been transformed into a museum that chronicles the rich history of the Sheybanid dynasty. The museum offers insights into the lives of the Sheybanid rulers and their significant contributions to the history of Islam.
