Itchan-Kala, the historic heart of Khiva, is a remarkable open-air museum that offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region. In ancient times, Khiva, like many other eastern cities, was divided into three distinct parts: the fortress known as Kunya-Ark, the suburb called Dishan-Kala, and the city itself, Itchan-Kala.
Today, Itchan-Kala stands as a preserved relic of the past, surrounded by imposing clay walls that stretch over 2 kilometers in length, reaching heights of up to 10 meters and thicknesses of 5-6 meters. This historic area, now a State Historical Archaeological Museum, spans 26 hectares and retains the exotic charm of an eastern city. What sets Itchan-Kala apart is that it is not merely a static museum; it is a living, breathing community where around 300 families reside, primarily engaged in traditional crafts.
