The Kalta-Minor Minaret in Khiva is an iconic monument of oriental architecture and a true symbol of the city. Its impressive size and unique design make it a standout structure in the ancient city.
The foundation of the Kalta-Minor Minaret measures 15 meters, with a diameter of 14.5 meters at the base, and it reaches a height of 29 meters. However, this massive tower represents only a third of its intended height. The construction of the minaret was halted in 1855 following the death of Khiva’s ruler, Muhammad Amin Khan. Originally, the minaret was planned to be 70 meters tall, with some records suggesting it could have reached 110 meters. The wide foundation was designed to enhance durability, while the top was intended to be narrower to reduce the load. Unfortunately, the project was never completed, and the tower remains unfinished, resembling a huge glazed barrel. This is why it is called Kalta-Minor, meaning «short minaret.»
