Muhammad Amin-khan Madrasah, Khiva

The Madrasah of Muhammad Amin-khan, located in the historic district of Itchan-Kala, is one of the most prominent landmarks in Khiva and the largest madrasah in Central Asia. This two-story building, constructed between 1851 and 1854 by order of the Khiva ruler Muhammad Amin-khan, covers an area of 72 by 60 meters and contains 125 khudjras (cells) designed to accommodate 260 students. A unique feature of this madrasah is that each khudjra consists of two rooms, and those on the second floor include a room and a loggia facing the facade.

The architectural design of the Madrasah of Muhammad Amin-khan is notable for its five domes and flanking towers. The facade is richly decorated with glazed brick ornaments, and the wooden doors are adorned with intricate carvings. The majolica facing is particularly impressive, featuring herbal patterns. Above the entrance, an Arabic inscription reads: «This wonderful building will stay here forever to descendants’ joy.»

Situated opposite the Kunya-Ark and near the Ata-Darvoza gate, the madrasah is also in close proximity to one of Khiva’s main symbols, the Kalta-Minor minaret. The minaret, also commissioned by Muhammad Amin-khan, was intended to be the tallest in the world, but its construction was halted at 29 meters following the ruler’s death, far short of the planned 70 meters.

Historically, the Madrasah of Muhammad Amin-khan was one of the wealthiest educational institutions, holding numerous wakf lands. It also housed the Chancery of the Supreme Muslim Courtyard. Today, the building serves multiple purposes, including a tour agency, hotel, currency exchange office, and cafe. Despite these modern uses, the madrasah has retained its historical appearance and continues to impress both residents and visitors of Khiva with its grandeur.
