The Muhammad Rahim-khan Madrasah in Khiva stands as a testament to the educational and architectural advancements of the Kungrat dynasty. Muhammad Rahim-khan, one of the most educated rulers of this dynasty since 1770, implemented numerous reforms in various sectors, with a significant focus on education. His efforts led to the establishment of the first ‘new type’ schools in Khiva, where both religious and secular subjects were taught. The construction of the Muhammad Rahim-khan Madrasah, one of the largest in Central Asia, marked the pinnacle of his rule. This institution offered a curriculum that included not only religious studies and the Koran but also secular subjects such as mathematics, astronomy, and geography. Students at the madrasah engaged in various intellectual activities, including composing poems and participating in debates.

The educational approach at the Muhammad Rahim-khan Madrasah was distinct from traditional Islamic universities, largely due to the influence of Muhammad Rahim-khan himself. An enlightened and well-educated monarch, he wrote poems under the pseudonym Feruz and often engaged in discussions with the students. His personal involvement in the educational process set this madrasah apart from others.

Completed in 1876, the Muhammad Rahim-khan Madrasah became one of the largest educational institutions in Central Asia. The two-story building features a high entrance portal and a courtyard with four aiwans (verandas) and four small turrets at the corners. Inside, there are 76 khudjras (living rooms), a darskhona (teaching block), summer and winter mosques, and an extensive library. The architectural design of the madrasah reflects the spirit of enlightenment and is a prime example of the cultural and architectural heritage of that era.
