Sayid Allauddin Mausoleum, Khiva

The Sayid Allauddin Mausoleum, located in the historic district of Itchan-Kala in Khiva, is one of the city’s oldest and most revered structures. This mausoleum serves as the burial site of the esteemed Eastern saint and Sufi sheikh, Sayid Allauddin. Over its centuries-long history, the mausoleum has undergone numerous restorations, and the exact date of its original construction remains uncertain. However, historians believe that the mausoleum was completed in the latter half of the 14th century.

Sayid Allauddin, a relative of the Prophet Muhammad, was a prominent Islamic preacher in Khiva during the late 13th century. He passed away in 1303, and approximately fifty years later, a mausoleum was constructed over his grave to honor his memory. Since its establishment, the mausoleum has become a significant pilgrimage site for believers from around the world. The mausoleum’s architecture is attributed to Amir Kulyal.

The architectural design of the Sayid Allauddin Mausoleum is characterized by its simplicity and lack of elaborate ornamentation. The structure features plain brick walls and domes, adhering to an ascetic style devoid of decorative elements. In the 19th century, a small square building known as the ziyarathona was added to the mausoleum, resulting in the entrance being relocated to the north. Although some ornamental elements were discovered during excavations, they have not been preserved due to the numerous reconstructions over the years.

Despite its unadorned appearance, the Sayid Allauddin Mausoleum attracts thousands of pilgrims from Uzbekistan and other countries annually. The mausoleum’s historical and spiritual significance, coupled with its austere architectural style, continues to draw visitors who seek to pay their respects to the revered saint and Sufi sheikh.
