Kitab Astronomical Park

Not far from Shakhrisabz, on the left bank of the Kashkadarya River and just 2 kilometers from the city of Kitab, the Kitab Latitude Station was established in 1928. Equipped with the Bamberg Zenith Telescope and Strasser-Rode pendulum clocks, regular latitude observations commenced on November 14, 1930. This station is one of only five in the world located along the latitude parallel of +39 degrees 08 minutes. To the west lie the Gatesburg (USA) and Karlforte (Italy) stations, while to the east are Mitsuzawa (Japan) and Ukiah (USA). The Kitab station is centrally positioned among these significant observatories, continuously monitoring changes in the Earth’s poles.

Among the over 200 existing observatories worldwide, only five hold exceptional importance, and it is a point of pride that the Kitab International Latitude Station is among them. Today, an astronomical park is being developed on its grounds—a unique facility with no analogs in Central Asia.

The Astro Park, based at the Kitab International Latitude Station, offers visitors insights into the scientific astronomical research conducted at the facility. Guests can observe stars, lunar craters, Saturn’s rings, and distant planets through powerful telescopes. The park also functions as a living museum, featuring retro equipment and instruments that are nearly a century old. Additionally, a 3D cinema showcases films about the history of astronomy, planets, and galaxies.

Officially inaugurated at the end of 1930, the Kitab Latitude Station joined other observatories located at the northern latitude of 39 degrees 08 minutes to participate in the International Latitude Service, which tracks changes in the Earth’s pole position.

In light of advancing technology, the station is now equipped with high-precision GPS instruments and is integrated into the International GNSS Service (IGS) as a reference station for the Central Asian region. Utilizing the latest satellite navigation technologies, geodynamic processes and tectonic plate movements are studied, while monitoring the Earth’s rotation parameters and ionosphere conditions. The data collected is applied in practical fields to establish a regional geodetic network.

Astronomy enthusiasts also flock to the Kamashin district, home to the Maidanak High-Altitude Observatory. Recently, a yurt camp has been established there, currently featuring 11 yurts, each accommodating a group of four. Interestingly, despite the high atmospheric pressure, many are eager to witness the beauty of the night sky firsthand. Plans are underway to significantly expand the yurt camp in the future.
