The Afrasiab Museum in Samarkand is a treasure trove of historical artifacts and exhibits that chronicle the rich and diverse history of this ancient city. Located in the northern part of Samarkand, near the central bazaar and the hills of the ancient settlement of Afrasiab, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Afrasiab, once the heart of ancient Samarkand, was a thriving city until it was destroyed by the Mongols in the early 13th century. The museum’s exhibits vividly illustrate the development of Samarkand from the time of Alexander the Great’s conquest to the present day. Visitors can explore a wide array of artifacts discovered during archaeological excavations at Afrasiab, each representing different periods of the settlement’s history.

Among the most valuable artifacts in the museum are ossuaries, fragments of ancient swords, knives, arrows, coins, pottery, and frescoes from the Samarkand palace of the Ikhshidid dynasty, dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries. These findings provide a unique insight into the daily life, culture, and artistic achievements of the people who once inhabited this ancient city.

Archaeological excavations and studies of the ancient city began in the late 19th century and continue to this day. The museum’s collection includes unique pieces of wall paintings from the 7th and 8th centuries, depicting hunting scenes and holiday celebrations. These frescoes are among the most valuable exhibits, offering a rare glimpse into the artistic and cultural heritage of ancient Samarkand.

The museum building itself is a work of art, designed by the Armenian architect Bagdasar Arzumanyan in 1970. With over 40 years of history, the building stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Samarkand’s rich cultural heritage.

The Afrasiab Museum in Samarkand is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the history and culture of this ancient city.
