Mausoleum of Imam al-Moturidi, Samarkand

The Imam al-Moturidi Mausoleum in Samarkand is a site of profound spiritual significance, commemorating the life and legacy of a venerated Islamic scholar. Imam al-Moturidi, an esteemed philosopher and theologian, championed the cause of Islamic purity. His final resting place, established in 944, lies within the Chokardiza cemetery, a burial ground shared with numerous other illustrious Islamic scientists.

The name ‘Chokardiza’ harks back to its origins as a military stronghold, with ‘Chokar’ denoting ‘army’ and ‘Disa’ signifying a ‘fortress’. This historical nexus of martial and scholarly pursuits underscores the cemetery’s storied past.

In 1947, the cemetery faced obliteration, but the grave of Imam al-Moturidi was rediscovered and reopened to the public on November 17, 2000. This event coincided with the 1130th anniversary of the Imam’s birth, a milestone celebrated with great reverence. The mausoleum underwent meticulous restoration, and the surrounding area was transformed into a landscaped haven, paying homage to the grandeur of Imam al-Moturidi’s contributions to the Islamic world, his enduring influence on Islamic thought and philosophy.
