Khodja Akhrar, a prominent figure and leader of the Sufi Naqshbandiya order, played a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of the region. His influence extended beyond the common folk to the rulers of his era, whom he guided with spiritual leadership. Notably, he was instrumental in the repeal of oppressive taxes in Mawaraunnahr and is credited with preventing a potentially devastating conflict between the rulers of Samarkand, Fergana, and Tashkent.

Renowned poet Djami lauded Khodja Akhrar as the «Khodja of Khodjas,» a sage who grasped the essence of matters deeply. He was revered for his sanctity, commanding presence, and intellectual fortitude. His philosophy emphasized the use of political authority to advance one’s spiritual endeavors. Under his guidance, the Naqshbandiya order branched out into Central Asia, Western Turkey, and India, leaving a lasting impact on the Islamic world.

Khodja Akhrar passed away in 1490 at the venerable age of 86 and was interred near Samarkand. His grave was marked by a white stone adorned with numerous epitaphs, quickly transforming the site into a hallowed cemetery and a magnet for pilgrims.

In 1630, Nodir Divan Begi, a ruler of Samarkand, commissioned the construction of a mosque and madrassah adjacent to Khodja Akhrar’s grave. The madrassah, completed over two years, was dubbed «the mirror of Sher-Dor» due to its facade’s resemblance to the Sher-dor Madrassah, featuring imagery of lions and deer. However, a century later, the structure suffered significant damage, with a leaning portal, lost decorations, and structural cracks.

The dawn of the 20th century marked a period of extensive restoration for this architectural gem. The facade was meticulously restored, and the portal was stabilized. Additionally, the ensemble was enhanced with a small minaret and an ayvan with columns.

Presently, the Khodja Akhrar Ensemble comprises the revitalized madrassah, mosques for both winter and summer, an ayvan, and a minaret. It continues to be a sanctuary for pilgrims and seekers of tranquility, echoing the spiritual legacy of Khodja Akhrar and serving as a testament to the enduring allure of sacred spaces.
