The Sher-Dor Madrasah, an iconic structure on the historic Registan Square in Samarkand, is a testament to the grandeur of the Timurid era. Constructed between 1619 and 1636, its name translates to «Madrasah with Lions,» a nod to the striking imagery that adorns its facade. This educational institution serves as a creative reinterpretation of the earlier Ulugbek Madrasah, which faces it across the square. Despite being newer and larger, Sher-Dor is often noted for its less intricate finishing work compared to its venerable counterpart.
The madrasah’s exterior and interior are adorned with vibrant patterns of glazed brickwork, featuring climbing floral motifs and Arabic inscriptions from the Quran. However, time has taken its toll, and parts of the original finish have been lost. Efforts by historians and restorers continue to revive Sher-Dor’s former splendor.
