The enigmatic «Kirk Kiz» structure, translating to «Forty Girls,» has long fascinated scholars and historians with its varied interpretations. Over the years, it has been thought of as everything from a royal palace and an abbey to a caravansarai, a Hanaqoh, or merely a civilian building. Located approximately 3 kilometers from the ancient city of Termez, the Kirk Kiz complex is deeply embedded in local folklore. It is linked to a popular national legend about Princess Gulaim and her forty maidens who valiantly defended against marauding nomads.
The Kirk Kiz building is constructed in a square layout, with each side measuring about 54 meters. The structure is made from raw brick and is fortified with robust towers at each corner. The building features an arched entrance and large windows on every facade, enhancing both its functionality and aesthetic appeal. Inside, the building is divided by two intersecting hallways that cross at right angles, creating four equal sections. At the heart of the complex lies a small square courtyard, measuring 11.5 by 11.5 meters. Some experts suggest this courtyard was once covered by a dome, while others believe it was left open.
