Kotayk region

Area: 2,089 sq. km
Administrative center: Hrazdan
Distance from Yerevan to Hrazdan: 42 km

Kotayk Province lies northeast of Yerevan, occupying a central position on the map of Armenia. This region is known for its striking and varied landscapes, which include mountain peaks, river valleys, volcanic ridges, and forested slopes. Roughly one-third of Kotayk’s territory is covered with woodland, making it one of the greenest regions in the country. In the east, the Gegham Mountains rise with dormant volcanoes dotting the highlands. Springs emerge in abundance across the province, feeding streams and nourishing fertile valleys.

The Razdan River cuts through Kotayk from end to end, winding through gorges and canyons before continuing south. It gives its name to the provincial capital—Hrazdan, a city built along its left bank. The region’s name, Kotayk, reaches far back into antiquity. According to tradition, it originates from the era when the Armenian Apostolic Church was led by a Patriarch named Kot. In ancient times, this area was part of the Ayrarat province of Greater Armenia.

Kotayk is widely regarded as Armenia’s prime destination for recreation, tourism, and sports. No other province in the country offers such a concentration of historical and natural landmarks. Within its borders are some of Armenia’s most revered sites: the Pagan Temple of the Sun in Garni, dating back to the 1st century CE, and the rock-carved monastic complex of Geghard from the 12th–13th centuries—both unique testaments to the country’s layered spiritual heritage.

Kotayk is also home to several health resorts built near natural mineral springs. Among them is Arzni, a lush canyon retreat famed for its therapeutic waters. Along the Razdan River gorge, the Arzni resort draws visitors seeking healing and rest. Meanwhile, the mountain resort town of Tsaghkadzor has earned a reputation as a top-tier destination for both winter skiing and year-round leisure, welcoming tourists from Armenia and beyond.

Hrazdan

Hrazdan, the administrative center of Kotayk, stands on the site of the former village of Nerkin Akhta and its neighboring settlements, on the river’s left bank. Unlike many Armenian towns steeped in ancient history, Hrazdan is a product of the 20th century. Its official founding date is 1959. The town’s creation and rapid growth were closely tied to the expansion of industrial activity in the region. In the mid-20th century, waves of settlers from various parts of Armenia moved here, helping shape Hrazdan into a modern industrial and administrative hub.
