Melik Tangi Bridge

Built in 1855 by Melik Tangi of Syunik, the stone bridge over the Vorotan River stands about 20 kilometers east of Sisian, beneath the remnants of the once-formidable fortress of Vorotnaberd. The bridge served not only as a crossing point but as a physical link to one of the region’s most significant medieval strongholds.

Vorotnaberd was carved into a ring of steep basalt cliffs, a natural fortress that offered excellent defense. For centuries, it played a critical role in protecting Syunik, witnessing repeated cycles of siege and liberation. From its capture in 450 CE during the time of Vardan Mamikonian, through Seljuk rule, to the campaigns of Tamerlane, the fortress endured. In the 18th century, David Bek reclaimed it from Melik Baghr, restoring a measure of Armenian control to the region.

Today, little remains of the once-imposing structure. A semicircular tower in the eastern part of the citadel and the ruins of an old chapel offer a glimpse of its former scale.

Near the bridge lies a thermal spring with a steady temperature of 37°C. Shaped into geometric pools during the Soviet period, the spring remains a popular summer destination. On hot days, visitors crowd the baths, drawn by the warm mineral waters, the cool air of the gorge, and the sound of the Vorotan River flowing through the sharp mountain landscape.

Though modest in appearance, the Melik Tangi Bridge connects not just two banks of a river but the layered histories of rebellion, resilience, and retreat carved into the stone of Syunik.
