Nizami Monument

On Nizami Avenue, heading east, a new monument to Nizami Ganjavi stands proudly in a small square by the banks of the Ganjachay River. Nizami, the Persian poet and arguably the most famous native of Ganja and Azerbaijan, is immortalized here.

What makes this monument particularly striking is how the poet appears almost overshadowed by his own creation. The monument features five pillars, each representing Khamse, the quintet of Nizami’s major epic poems.

This newly developed square lies on the banks of the Ganjachay River — a swift, shallow waterway typical of the South Caucasus, spanned by numerous bridges for both vehicles and pedestrians. The romantic atmosphere of the monument is further enhanced by a small waterfall, adding a serene touch to the setting.

Just a short distance from the first monument, near a distant bridge, stands another tribute to Nizami (installed in 1946). This version, in stark contrast, is a more Soviet-style monument, located about a kilometer away from the original. Across from the poet, on Abbaszade Street, stands the Ganja Drama Theater, its unassuming façade turned sideways toward the street, blending into the daily rhythm of city life.
