Gulistan mausoleum near Julfa

Just five kilometers upstream along the Aras River from the town of Julfa lies the quaint suburban village of Gulistan, home to the eponymous 13th-century mausoleum. This mausoleum is far from typical—its tomb is not buried underground but is instead housed within the foundation itself. The main chamber, a twelve-sided hall on the second tier, notably lacks doors, connecting with the outside world only through windows. This architectural choice suggests the structure was designed primarily to play with light, casting ethereal patterns through the small ceiling window above the tomb.

The mausoleum’s form is striking: a dodecagon resting atop a square base. It is adorned with intricate, delicate ornamentation and has undergone meticulous restoration. Remarkably, it retains an authentic historic aura, avoiding the artificial feel that often plagues many restorations in Nakhchivan.

Yet, what makes this site truly captivating is not merely the mausoleum itself, but its location. Perched almost on the banks of the Aras River, the mausoleum stands at the very border dividing the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and Iran. From this vantage point, sweeping views open up across the river, revealing Iranian mountains, ancient fortifications, and even churches. The Iranian side of the Aras boasts a wealth of preserved Armenian monasteries and historic churches, a heritage that, on the Nakhchivan side, is conspicuously ignored or denied.

Visitors can enter the mausoleum’s interior, but inside, there is little to see—an empty shell that invites contemplation more than discovery.
