The Big Bazaar Mosque

Big Bazar Mescidi, Lankaran

The Great Bazaar Mosque (Azerbaijani: Böyük Bazar məscidi) is a significant mosque located in the city of Lankaran, Azerbaijan. Recognized for its architectural and cultural importance, the mosque was placed under state protection by a decree from the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan on August 2, 2001.

Constructed in the early years of the 19th century, the Great Bazaar Mosque is currently the oldest mosque in Lankaran. The mosque’s walls are built from red fired brick, while its roof is covered with ceramic tiles. The mosque derives its name from its location in the area known as Büyük Bazar (Great Bazaar) in the center of Lankaran.

The mosque complex consists of a main building, auxiliary structures, and a minaret. The original minaret was destroyed during the Soviet era, but a new 36-meter minaret was constructed in 1995. The mosque occupies an area of 500 square meters and can accommodate up to 550 worshippers at one time.

Even for those who have traveled the world and are well-versed in Islamic architectural styles, the Great Bazaar Mosque offers a captivating sight. This rectangular structure, built in the early 19th century from red fired brick with a ceramic-tiled roof, comprises both the main building and auxiliary facilities, along with its impressive minaret.
