Climate & Leisure

Lankaran, a settlement with a remarkably advantageous geographical location, was founded over a thousand years before Christ. Archaeological findings indicate that human habitation in this area dates back to the Bronze Age. Today, Lankaran stands out as one of the most picturesque corners of Azerbaijan, boasting lush vegetation, ideal natural conditions, breathtaking landscapes, and the presence of thermal springs along its distinctive black sandy coastline. Located 250 kilometers from Baku, it is a mere three-hour drive from the international airport and just 2.5 kilometers from the local airfield in the southeast of the country.

The climate in Lankaran differs significantly from that of most other towns in Azerbaijan. It features a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and mild winters. The best time to visit is during the summer months or in the first half of September, as the likelihood of encountering rainy weather increases afterward. For those seeking maximum comfort, June and late August are ideal, with average temperatures around 28 degrees Celsius. Those who are not deterred by intense heat (above 30 degrees) can also enjoy a visit during the peak of summer. The sea in this region is notably warm, reaching temperatures of 25 to 29 degrees Celsius throughout the tourist season.

It is worth noting that Lankaran is an excellent destination for health tourism. The air here is exceptionally gentle, infused with moisture and the fragrances of greenery and blooming flowers. The surrounding area is home to healing thermal springs that assist in alleviating various ailments. The shoreline is adorned with black sand mixed with volcanic materials, which are believed to possess therapeutic properties.

In terms of infrastructure, Lankaran is relatively developed, although this is compensated for by the high quality of service. The city is dotted with numerous hotel complexes, tourist bases, and sanatoriums that offer excellent accommodations, alongside a variety of small shops and restaurants.

The most popular form of recreation in Lankaran is undoubtedly beach-related activities. This stretch of the Transcaucasian coast features a stunning shoreline, abundant greenery, and crystal-clear warm waters with shallow depths, creating an ideal environment for relaxation for visitors of all ages. A unique highlight of the local beaches is the unusual dark sand, known for its ability to alleviate conditions related to the cardiovascular and nervous systems, as well as musculoskeletal issues.

Beach vacations in Lankaran are characterized by perfect conditions. The coastal area is never overcrowded, allowing visitors to fully enjoy their holiday. The beach is well-equipped, with sun loungers, shaded areas, changing rooms, restrooms, and dining establishments readily available. There are designated zones for separate swimming for men and women. The sea and shoreline here are cleaner than those in Baku and its surrounding areas, with easy access to the water. However, due to the dark color of the sand, which heats up significantly, it is advisable to wear special footwear when walking along the beach.
