Just a short distance from Lankaran lies the quaint village of Arkivan, renowned for its extraordinary natural spring, known locally as Yanar-Bulag, which translates to “Burning Spring” in Azerbaijani. This unique source of water is considered a true marvel by the locals and is modestly marked by a sign depicting a pitcher at the village entrance.
The story of Yanar-Bulag began in the 1970s when Soviet geologists were exploring the region’s underground rivers. While drilling a fountain, they initially overlooked the extraordinary nature of the water that flowed from it. It wasn’t until a few days later that one of the geologists noticed something remarkable: the water ignited when exposed to sunlight. Curious, he struck a match and was astonished to see the water catch fire instantly.
The phenomenon occurs due to the presence of methane gas in the water, which allows it to ignite. Despite its flammable nature, the water is safe to drink and is even considered beneficial for health. Numerous laboratory studies have confirmed that Yanar-Bulag contains a wealth of essential minerals that promote digestive health. Interestingly, even if you touch the ignited water, you will not get burned.
The healing properties of this water have been validated by scientific research, with its mineral composition known to enhance digestive function. Medical professionals often recommend this water to patients suffering from gastrointestinal issues, including stomach and intestinal disorders. Additionally, the sulfurous nature of the water has been found effective in treating facial skin rashes.
