Afurja Waterfall (Azerbaijani: Afurca şəlaləsi) holds the title of the tallest waterfall in Azerbaijan. Nestled in the basin of the Velvelechay River, near the Tengin Gorge and close to the village of Afurja in the Guba region, this magnificent cascade tumbles down from the heights of Mount Tengi, reaching an impressive height of approximately 70 meters. Recognized as a natural monument, Afurja Waterfall is protected by the state, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

During periods of low water flow, particularly in the dry season, the waterfall may not be as vigorous; however, when the rains come, the waterfall roars with life and power. Visitors should be aware that by August, the water levels can diminish significantly. Nonetheless, this breathtaking site is worthy of special attention at any time of the year. The waterfall is situated within a gorge that boasts stunning natural landscapes, allowing adventurous souls to walk behind the cascade—much like stepping behind a veil—creating opportunities for unique photographs of the surrounding valley.

The name “Afurja” is aptly chosen, as it translates to “water splashes.” The strong winds cause the waterfall’s streams to sway alternately to the right and left, sending cool droplets scattering in all directions. In addition to the picturesque views of the Afurja Waterfall, the area also attracts tourists with its remarkable feature of over forty springs that burst forth from the ground, located about 10 kilometers away from the waterfall.
