Carpet weaving workshops

Amidst the enchanting landscapes and majestic mountains, the ancient city of Guba has preserved a cherished piece of its cultural heritage—carpet weaving. This age-old craft has been practiced here since time immemorial, and the secrets of its artistry continue to thrive. How are these exquisite carpets made? The answer lies in the skilled hands of local artisans, who are eager to share their knowledge through guided tours and visits to Guba’s renowned carpet weaving workshops.

Over 30 distinct carpet styles are crafted here, predominantly by women in villages such as Pirəbədil, Davachi, Gonagkend, Zeyva, and Qaragashli, as well as in the neighboring Gusar region. Each village boasts its own unique weaving techniques and designs. For instance, the carpets of Pirəbədil are distinguished by their intricate floral motifs set against serene shades of blue or ivory. In Gonagkend, the central field of the carpets is often adorned with ornate medallions known as butaly. These medallions feature the ancient buta symbol—a stylized flame representing fire, a powerful motif in the region’s cultural lore.

Even if carpets have never sparked your interest, a visit to these local workshops is sure to leave you captivated. Here, artisans meticulously handcraft luxurious pieces, many of which find their way into prestigious private collections due to their exceptional beauty. Guba carpets are renowned for their elaborate geometric patterns and rich, vibrant color palettes. What makes these creations even more remarkable is the use of natural dyes, a practice that upholds centuries-old traditions. A testament to the region’s artistry, the famous Golu Chichi carpet, woven in Guba in 1712, is now proudly displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

For those eager to immerse themselves in this living tradition, there’s no better way than participating in a hands-on workshop. These master classes, available through private guides or the Guba Regional Tourism Office, offer a rare opportunity to learn the ancient techniques of carpet weaving from the artisans themselves.
