Good afternoon! We are planning to go to Samarkand in April. Are there places not far from the city where you can do one-day trekking in the mountains? I read about the Agalyk Mountain Range (also sometimes called Okhalik) — is it the same place? Does anyone know if it’s possible to get there independently? Or please recommend people who have had such experience. We would like to combine a city vacation with some nature.

From the city center to Yukary-Agalyk it’s 25 km — you can get there by taxi. And then just head upward!

Thank you! So it’s possible to hike around there on your own, there are trails? And there is no public transport?

There is one marshrutka that goes there, but it stops about three kilometers short — a taxi is inexpensive. From there you’ll have to walk back to the marshrutka — there is usually no mobile connection there. Or arrange with the taxi driver who takes you there so that he comes back for you at a certain time.

Thank you! For some reason there isn’t much information online about mountain hiking near Samarkand.
