Which border crossings are currently open for travel between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan?

Following the armed conflicts between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in April-May 2021, which resulted in more than 50 casualties on both sides, all border crossings between the two countries were closed. The situation escalated further during another major conflict in September 2022, with over 120 fatalities reported.

It wasn’t until a year later that the crossings reopened, but only for foreign tourists.

For foreign tourists, the Pamir Highway is currently open for transit. However, vehicles with Tajik license plates are not allowed to cross into Kyrgyzstan via the Pamir Highway.

There is a 25 km stretch of neutral territory between the border checkpoints, which is not walkable. To get through, you’ll need to arrange transport in advance so you can switch vehicles in the neutral zone (unless you travel on non-tajik plates).

Additionally, as of now, travelers need to obtain permission to enter Kyrgyzstan from Tajikistan beforehand. The easiest way to handle this is through a travel agency, which can organize legitimate permits for your entry.
