I’m planning a trip along the Pamir Highway and would like to know if it’s possible to cross the Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border (Bor Dobo – Kyzylart) using a shared taxi. I’ve read that private or rental cars are allowed, but I’m curious if anyone has done this journey using shared transportation.
Additionally, I’ve heard about the requirement to email tourism.department@tourism.gov.kg to request approval for the crossing. Is this still necessary in 2025?
Any advice or recent experiences would be greatly appreciated!
I looked into this crossing recently. In the past, locals from the Mughab region could travel to Osh via shared 4WD taxis, but unfortunately, shared taxis are no longer allowed to cross the border. Unless there’s been a policy change in 2024 (which seems unlikely at the moment), it’s not an option. Border for locals is closed due to some border conflict back in 2022-2023, they just allowed foreigners to cross the border in mid 2024. But you would need to have an authorization received from Kyrgyz side, via email you posted. Though they will provide you with a contacts of couple of travel agencies to arrange that.
If you’re traveling along the Pamir Highway, your best bet is to hire a private driver or arrange transportation through a local agency. It’s more expensive but ensures a smoother crossing.
Safe travels, and enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Pamirs!
To my knowledge, shared taxis for this crossing are still restricted for locals. Border for foreigners was opened in Jully 2024. If you’re planning to cross the Bor Dobo – Kyzylart border, you’ll need a special permit from the Kyrgyz side. This can be arranged through a reputable local travel agency, and they’ll usually take care of all the paperwork for you. Again, the border is still closed for the citizens of these two countries, so you will change a car at the neutral zone, which is located at Kyzyl Art Pass standing at 4180 meters above sea level.
If you’re on a tight schedule, I’d recommend contacting an agency ahead of time to ensure your permit is ready by the time you reach the border.
For those planning to cross the Bor Dobo – Kyzylart border, I recommend these agencies for arranging permits and transportation:
