Hi, I’m planning a day trip to Tajikistan next February. I’ll be traveling from Samarkand and want to visit Panjakent and the Seven Lakes. Is it feasible to visit them in winter? Even if we can’t make it to the seventh lake, we’d be happy seeing some of them. Also, is it possible to rent a taxi at the Panjakent border during winter?

Yes, visiting the Seven Lakes in winter is possible, but only up to the sixth lake. To make the trip during this season, you’ll need a 4×4 vehicle as the roads can be snowy or icy. Regular taxis might not be suitable for these conditions.

What about in March? Is mid-March still considered winter, or is the ice starting to melt by then?

By mid-March, the weather begins to warm up, but it’s also the start of the rainy season. While ice may start melting, this can make roads muddy and more challenging to navigate.
