Has anyone ever rented a car in Samarkand or Bukhara?
I know there are rental options in Tashkent (even Sixt operates there), but I haven’t heard anything about Samarkand.

Yes, I rented a car from them last year. It was a Chevrolet Cobalt with a manual transmission (automatic costs the same), $40 per day with full insurance.

Quick summary:

  • Company: Great service! Highly recommend.
  • Car: Sturdy and comfortable.
  • Roads: 90% are in good condition.
  • Route: 1600 km - Tashkent -> Charvak -> Zaamin -> Samarkand -> Bukhara -> Tashkent.
  • Fuel: Plenty of gas stations almost everywhere. I had heard stories about fuel shortages, so I was a bit tense during the trip, but there was no issue at all.
  • Police: I wasn’t stopped even once.
  • Cameras: There are a lot, especially on highways and in Tashkent. Luckily, I didn’t get caught.

One great thing about Sixt: no deposit required!
You can pay in cash (USD or som) when picking up the car, or get a 5–7% discount by booking online in advance.
Zero complaints.

Can you return the car in Bukhara or Samarkand, or does it have to be Tashkent?

It’s possible to return it in Samarkand, but there’s an extra fee.
Just message them on WhatsApp—they respond quickly.

Let me share my experience for reference...

In April, we rented two cars in Samarkand for 4 days and drove them to Bukhara and back. For two cars (something like Lacetti), the deal was $230, plus a $400 deposit for both.

We requested two white cars. In the end, something didn’t work out, and they brought us one black car and one that wasn’t even washed. So, we made sure to include in the contract that we wouldn’t pay for cleaning the dirty car.

They also threw in two additional drivers per car for free.

After we returned the cars, they immediately refunded $200 of the deposit. The remaining amount came back a few days later—but not the full amount. They cited that the washed car was returned dirty, and we also got a fine with photo evidence.

So instead of $200, we got about $164 back on a Tinkoff card.

Overall, it was fine.

In total, the two cars for 4 days cost us $266. The cars weren’t in perfect condition...

Where we rented: Sam Car Rent.
