Gvara Fortress, a remarkable ruin dating back to the 6th century, boasts an exquisite location chosen for its strategic vantage point, offering panoramic views of the surrounding gorge while remaining difficult to access. This fortress served as a refuge and a watchtower against frequent invasions, and it also functioned as a primitive customs post. Recently, archaeologists uncovered 25 clay jars, known as qvevri, which have been traditionally buried in the ground for over 8,000 years for winemaking in Georgia. However, it is likely that the qvevri within the fortress were used for storing water and food.
This site is perfect for photography and videography! A steep pathway consisting of 265 steps leads to the fortress, winding through a lush Colchian forest filled with evergreen rhododendrons, chestnuts, beeches, and walnuts. I highly recommend taking a few breaks along the way to inhale the fresh, clean air of this pristine region! Many tourists often express a desire to bottle up the refreshing atmosphere to take home.
Exercise caution as you navigate the fortress walls; following numerous archaeological excavations, stones protrude from the walls, requiring careful movement. It’s advisable to wear sturdy athletic shoes for this trek.
You can park your vehicle near a quaint café, as there is no centralized parking available. However, the area can accommodate about 5 to 7 cars, and it’s rare for there to be more than that. Just behind the café, you’ll find the staircase leading to the fortress. Keep in mind that the staircase descends! Yes, while the fortress is situated at a picturesque point with stunning views, you will drive quite high up, leaving the fortress slightly lower down the hill.
After your exploration, take a moment to catch your breath while enjoying a coffee or ice cream at the café. The owner is incredibly friendly and welcoming. You can also purchase local Georgian tea and homemade products such as honey, jam, and chacha. Just be sure not to take jars from the display outside, as they have been sitting in the sun all day. Request that the staff bring you items from inside.
Most importantly, don’t miss the sharp turn off the main road onto the dirt path leading to the fortress. It’s a steep ascent, and for orientation, look for a concrete bus stop and a small bridge. The necessary turn is to the left, just before these landmarks, where you’ll also find a sign indicating “Gvara.”
