Adjara is one of the most beautiful regions in Georgia, where the pristine coastline meets stunning mountainous landscapes, creating an unforgettable vacation experience. Batumi and its surroundings are rich in attractions, among which the Queen Tamar Bridge and the Mahuntseti Waterfall stand out, located near the quaint village of the same name.
Both of these sites are incredibly photogenic and uniquely captivating, making them immensely popular among tourists. During the summer and early autumn, when the influx of visitors peaks, these areas become quite crowded. Access to both the bridge and the waterfall is unrestricted and completely free of charge.
The bridge and the waterfall are in close proximity to one another, with the bridge being nearer to the road, making it a common first stop for visitors. In Adjara, there are over twenty similar arched bridges, but the one near Mahuntseti is the largest. The Queen Tamar Bridge spans 29 meters in length.
This bridge derives its name from its historical significance, as it was built during the reign of Queen Tamar, between the 11th and 13th centuries. Constructed from stone and lime mortar, it crosses the Adjaristskali River at a height of six meters.
Thanks to its arched design, the bridge has withstood the test of time despite the region’s seismic activity. However, it requires regular maintenance for safety, with the latest restoration completed in 2008. During peak season, the bridge and the riverbanks attract numerous tourists, some of whom even take a dip in the waters below. For those seeking a unique experience, boat rides are available, offering a different perspective of the bridge from the water. Nearby cafes serve delicious local dishes, adding to the charm of the visit.
While Mahuntseti Waterfall is not the only waterfall in the area, it is certainly the most spectacular. Visitors can also spot a smaller waterfall along the way. The Mahuntseti Waterfall cascades down from a height of over 20 meters.
The water flow increases significantly in spring as the snow in the mountains begins to melt, but during the hot summer months, the waterfall diminishes in size. Despite the cooler temperatures, many visitors believe in the healing properties of its waters and take a refreshing swim.
To reach the waterfall, visitors must turn off the main road to the left and park their cars before embarking on the hiking trail leading up the mountain. The trailhead is marked by a small wooden gate, flanked by numerous stalls selling local farm products. At the end of the path, there is a viewing platform and a summer café where guests can admire the breathtaking view.
The Queen Tamar Bridge and Mahuntseti Waterfall are located east of Batumi. To reach them, one must travel approximately 29 kilometers along the Batumi-Akhaltsikhe highway in a southeast direction. This journey is quite manageable, as public transportation runs regularly from the city. Visitors can also drive to the location at any time.
Both sites are situated on opposite sides of the road near the village of Zeda Mahuntseti, with a distance of just over one kilometer between them, easily walkable in about 20 minutes.
Marshrutkas (minibuses) numbered 77 depart from the Batumi bus station, heading to the village of Keda. Alternatively, travelers can board any minibus heading in a similar direction. Public transport in Georgia is very affordable, making it a popular choice for many. The fare is only 2 lari one way. During peak season, these minibuses fill up quickly.
To avoid standing or waiting for a long time, it’s advisable to catch a ride from the bus station early in the morning. As they leave Batumi, the marshrutkas travel along Chavchavadze Street, where they pick up passengers if there are available seats. It’s best to inform the driver of your intended stop in advance. The bridge and waterfall are well-known attractions, so finding them is straightforward. The total travel time is approximately 40 minutes one way.
