The Koruldi Lakes, Mestia

Perched high in the Svanetian mountains above the regional center of Mestia, the Koruldi Lakes are a cluster of small alpine lakes shimmering at an elevation of 2,760 meters above sea level. Though modest in size, these high-mountain waters are the reward at the end of one of Mestia’s most sought-after—and most demanding—trekking adventures.

The hike to the Koruldi Lakes begins right from the heart of Mestia, offering a continuous uphill climb that tests endurance as much as it rewards the senses. While the route is undeniably strenuous, it is also among the most breathtaking in the region. For those looking to save time and preserve their strength, the trek can be done on horseback, adding a unique and traditional flair to the journey.

You don’t need specialized equipment to reach the lakes—what matters most is a solid level of physical fitness. The path involves frequent ascents and descents, with the lakes sitting about 1,200 meters above the village of Mestia. It’s a challenging route, but one that immerses you in the wild and rugged beauty of the Caucasus.

That said, it’s important to manage expectations. The lakes themselves, while tranquil, are relatively unremarkable in appearance—shallow pools that resemble oversized puddles more than dramatic alpine spectacles. But in truth, the lakes are not the destination so much as the excuse—a reason to ascend into the high mountains and traverse one of the region’s most scenic routes. Though it’s a tougher climb than the path to the Chalaadi Glacier, the panoramas from this height are unrivaled.

The water in the Koruldi Lakes is still and not safe to drink without treatment. However, if you’ve packed a portable stove, you can easily boil the rain-fed water and brew a mountain-scented cup of tea. It’s almost clean, but should always be purified before consumption.

How to find the trail:

  • Start from Mestia’s central square and head east.

  • After about 500 meters, turn onto Khergiani Street.

  • Continue past a traditional Svan tower.

  • Stay on the ascending path. The main trail will eventually lead to a dirt road. If you’re looking to experience more of the natural surroundings, take the scenic left-hand detour at one of the forks—this shorter route is also more picturesque.

  • The trail leads to a metal cross and a small mountain hut, perfect spots for a rest and a panoramic view of the valley below. Reaching the cross typically takes around five hours.

  • From there, signposts will guide you further to the lakes—allow roughly two more hours to reach them from the cross.

Insider Tip:
At Mestia’s main square, stop by the tourist information office to pick up a detailed local map and confirm the route conditions. The total distance of the hike is approximately 15.6 kilometers, and depending on your pace and rest stops, the journey takes between six to eight hours round-trip.
