Alma-Arasan Gorge

Nestled on the northern slopes of the Zailiysky Alatau at an elevation of 1,780 meters, the Alma-Arasan Gorge is one of the most picturesque valleys surrounding Almaty. The gorge is traversed by the Prokhodnaya River, which has led to its alternate name, the Prokhodnoye Gorge. It culminates at the Almaty Pass, creating a stunning natural gateway.

The flora within the gorge is remarkably diverse, featuring majestic spruces, vibrant shrubs, and aromatic herbs that thrive in this serene environment. At an altitude of 1,872 meters, a health and wellness area awaits visitors, boasting wooden pools filled with both hot and cold thermal waters. The term “arasan” translates from Kazakh as “warm spring,” perfectly capturing the essence of this rejuvenating location. Here, visitors are surrounded by steep mountain slopes adorned with ancient spruces on one side, while the rushing river flows vigorously on the other.

The Alma-Arasan wellness area is open year-round, offering a refreshing retreat regardless of the season. Following recent renovations, the infrastructure has been significantly improved, featuring comfortable stairways, bridges, gazebos, and benches for relaxation. Facilities such as changing rooms, restrooms, and a workout zone have also been established to enhance visitor experience. Just a five-minute walk from this serene oasis lies a charming waterfall known as “Maiden’s Tears,” which adds to the gorge’s enchanting atmosphere. In winter, the landscape transforms into a breathtaking spectacle, with the azure waters contrasting beautifully against the pristine white snow and the lush greenery of the trees.

From almost any vantage point in the gorge, visitors are treated to mesmerizing views of the Zailiysky Alatau slopes, delightful spruce forests, and the crystalline river below. Alma-Arasan is a perfect destination for leisurely walks, summer picnics, wellness programs, and simply soaking in the stunning mountain scenery.

How to Get There: To reach Alma-Arasan, you can drive your own car, take a taxi, or catch buses No. 108 and 211 to the “Alma-Arasan Sanatorium” stop along Dulati Avenue. From there, you can walk or take a short ride to the parking area, where a fork in the road marks the starting point of your journey (road signs will guide you). Please note that if you are traveling by your own vehicle or taxi, an ecological fee is required.
