Butakov Gorge is a vibrant and picturesque 14-kilometer-long site nestled in the mountains of the Zailiyskiy Alatau, at an elevation of 1,700 to 2,900 meters. Flowing through the gorge is the Butakovka River, a tributary of the Malaya Almatinka River. The name “Butak” in Kazakh means “branch,” which gives a hint of the gorge’s natural surroundings.
Butakov Gorge is a protected natural area and part of the Ile-Alatau National Park, while also falling under the jurisdiction of the city of Almaty. Within the gorge are several small passes—Komissarovsky, Lesnoy, Yunnatov, and others—that can be traversed without special equipment or advanced training. In Soviet times, the gorge hosted a training center, a pioneer camp, and a Writers’ Retreat, although these have long since ceased to operate.
The gorge is home to two waterfalls—the Upper and Lower Butakov Waterfalls. In winter, when the waterfalls freeze, the view is breathtaking, resembling a scene from a fairy tale of ice palaces. In summer, the waterfalls cascade to the ground in sparkling streams. To reach the waterfalls, one must hike along the Butakovka River. The Lower Butakov Waterfall, standing about 30 meters high, is located amid rocky cliffs. Many travelers enjoy crossing the waterfall and experiencing the sensation of being “inside” it. Behind the cascade, there is a small rocky ledge that offers a stunning view through the watery veil. As you ascend, there are rest stops where you can pause to admire the sweeping view of Almaty from a height.
The Upper Butakov Waterfall, at 20 meters high, is less visited, perhaps because of its higher altitude—nearly 2,500 meters. However, the path to it is well-trodden and fairly easy to navigate. The Upper Waterfall is closer to the highlands, where snow often lingers even in the warmer months. Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of plants, flowers, and trees. The gorge is home to the Tien Shan spruce, barberry bushes, various apple varieties, aspen, rowan trees, and more.
Residents of Almaty and visitors alike, seeking a respite from the bustling metropolis, often come here for leisurely strolls. A walk through the foothills of the Zailiyskiy Alatau invigorates and recharges the spirit, providing energy for the entire week. Butakov Gorge is especially stunning in autumn, when Almaty and its surroundings become a parade of colors and shades. The trees seem to don their finest attire during the golden fall season.
Tourists and locals leave the gorge with an uplifted mood, incredible photographs, and a deep sense of serenity.
How to Get There
You can reach Butakov Gorge by taxi or private car via Dostyk Avenue, then continue on Kerei and Zhanibek Khans Street. Afterward, turn onto the smaller Beiseuova Street and drive until you reach the “Eco-post” stop. Here, you must park the car and continue the journey on foot.
Alternatively, city bus №29R also reaches the “Eco-post” stop.
Another option is to start from the Medeu high-mountain skating rink (which can be reached by bus №12), then walk from Medeu to Butakov Gorge (take the right side of the road from Medeu, cross the Malý Komissarovsky Pass, and you will arrive at Butakov Gorge). The roads are good—partly asphalted, and the rest well-worn by thousands of tourists’ footsteps.
