Kaindy is an extraordinary turquoise lake nestled between mountain slopes, known for its unusual “spikes.” The lake got its name from the birch grove nearby, as “қайың” translates to “birch” in Kazakh. It’s a relatively young lake, having formed about 100 years ago after a devastating earthquake hit the Almaty region. The quake triggered landslides in the gorge, blocking a mountain stream and creating a natural dam. This area was once home to a pine forest, and as the valley filled with water, the trees remained, standing tall in the middle of the lake. Unfortunately, these submerged trees won’t last forever. It’s believed that in another 50 years, the lake will lose much of its charm, becoming desolate. For now, however, it’s a rare natural wonder that visitors should prioritize seeing.
There is an entrance fee to access the location. Upon approaching the lake, you will need to pay 750 tenge (about 150 rubles) per person. If you’d prefer not to walk the final kilometer uphill after parking, you can arrange for a horseback ride from the ecological checkpoint. For those seeking an extended experience, it’s possible to camp overnight, enjoy a traditional barbecue, and even sample kumis—a fermented dairy drink popular in the region.
Visiting Kaindy Lake is not only about admiring its remarkable scenery but also about connecting with the unique natural history of the region. Over time, the once-thriving pine trees, now preserved underwater, offer a surreal landscape. Though the forest will eventually succumb to time, today, this destination remains a testament to nature’s ability to transform tragedy into beauty.
