Known as the “Pearl of the Northern Tien Shan,” the Kolsai Lakes are a series of three breathtaking mountain lakes, all connected by the Kolsai River, which originates in the glaciers of the Kungei Alatau range. Nestled in a secluded mountain gorge, each lake boasts its own unique charm.
The most picturesque of the three is considered to be Mynzhylky, the middle lake, which stands out due to its heart-shaped form. Perched high between the mountain slopes, it offers a mesmerizing view. The first lake, Saty, is the largest and greets visitors at the foot of the mountains, surrounded by a dense pine forest. The third, Upper Kolsai, is the smallest and the highest-altitude lake, lying farthest from the others, right on the border with Kyrgyzstan.
Yet, truthfully, every Kolsai Lake possesses its own distinct beauty. The shores of each lake are fringed with turquoise-green waters, bordered by alpine meadows teeming with vibrant wildflowers, including the rare Edelweiss, which stands out as one of the region’s most precious treasures.
According to local legend, long ago, two families lived in the region: one wealthy, the other poor. The poor family had a single son, while the rich family had three daughters. The two families were close, and their children often played together. As the daughters grew older and it was time for them to marry, their father asked each of them in private who they wished to wed. Each of the daughters chose the same boy from the poor family. Confused, the father sought guidance from God, who, in response, transformed the three sisters into beautiful, pristine lakes, while the boy became the river that connects them. In this way, they remained united forever.
Visitors can hike up to each of the lakes, passing through the stunning landscapes of the nature reserve along the way. However, swimming in the lakes is forbidden, so be sure to pack a camera and a good mood to fully enjoy the experience and capture memories of these unforgettable sites.
The Kolsai Lakes are more than just a scenic wonder; they are a place where nature, legend, and beauty merge, offering travelers a magical escape into the heart of the Tien Shan mountains.
