Begazy necropolis

The Begazy Complex stands as one of the largest Bronze Age memorial sites and a treasure of Kazakhstan’s historical and archaeological heritage. Based on the accompanying artifacts, the burial ground dates back to the 9th–8th centuries BCE and was mainly reserved for the elite—tribal leaders and religious figures.

This vast burial complex is composed of numerous tombs spanning different eras of interment. All mausoleums are square-shaped, with entrances oriented toward the east, and were built using colossal stone slabs weighing up to three tons each. Some structures reach impressive heights of 4.5 meters. Several monuments are divided into two chambers: one for the deceased, and the other a kind of commemorative table. There is also a section within the necropolis where bodies were cremated.

Excavations at Begazy have unearthed everyday items, jewelry, fragments of household and military tools, and animal bones. Many of these artifacts are now preserved in museums around the world, adding to our understanding of this remarkable site’s historical significance.
