The Shunak Crater

The Shunak Crater is a fascinating natural monument, shaped by cosmic forces. For a long time, it was believed to be of volcanic origin, but thorough studies conducted in the 1970s confirmed its extraterrestrial nature. Millions of years ago, a massive meteorite struck Earth, obliterating all life within a radius of several thousand kilometers. This astral impact site took its name from the nearby Shunak Mountain.

Today, the meteorite’s landing site is a vast depression over 3,000 meters in diameter and nearly 400 meters deep, encircled by a 100-meter-high rim. Its flat basin is covered with loose lake sediments, suggesting that a lake with relatively warm water once filled the crater. In appearance, the Shunak crater bears a strong resemblance to typical lunar or Martian craters.

With a diameter of 3,110 meters, Shunak is two and a half times wider than the renowned Barringer Crater in Arizona, USA. Its well-defined ring-shaped rim and flattened, clay-covered floor are prominent features, making it a striking geological formation.

Although some attribute mystical energy or believe the crater to be a spiritual center, the essence of Shunak is as a rare and intriguing natural wonder worthy of a visit.

The crater lies in the southern part of the Shet district, about 35 km southwest of the village of Kiikti.
