Burgulyuk Gorge

Just 50 kilometers from the city lies the stunningly scenic Burgulyuk Gorge. Gracefully stretching across an elevation of 1,100 meters in the foothills of the Tian Shan Mountains—a considerable height for the Turkestan region—the gorge forms part of the protected area within the Sayram-Ugam National Park. The Burgulyuk River runs the length of the gorge, its crystal-clear waters nourishing the lush greenery that fills the valley. This verdant mountain landscape releases phytoncides into the air, infusing the gorge with a refreshing, healthful aroma.

The gorge is home to numerous attractions, including a spectacular waterfall, intricate canyons, and the famed «Moon Glade,» which hosts rock climbing competitions. Along the banks of the Burgulyuk River, visitors can set up a cozy campsite to enjoy the pristine surroundings. The river is also a popular spot for swimming. The gorge is rich in natural diversity, featuring pine, fir, oak, barberry, chestnut, and wild rose. During the Soviet era, it was the site of a children’s camp named after Valentina Tereshkova, the renowned cosmonaut. Moon Glade, in particular, has long been a favorite spot for rock climbers, with competitions held there both in Soviet times and today.

From 1973 to 1976, archaeological excavations were conducted in the area, unearthing ancient settlements dating back to the 16th–18th centuries. Today, the gorge is also home to the Birkolyk sanatorium and recreation center, providing a base for relaxation and exploration.

Burgulyuk Gorge is inaccessible by vehicle, making it ideal for hiking excursions only. Unlike the Zailiysky Alatau, the mountains of the western Tian Shan region are notably sparse in coniferous forests, adding to the uniqueness of this natural sanctuary.
