Tortkul Caravanserai

One of the most intriguing archaeological sites of ancient Taraz, the Tortkul Caravanserai, has been carefully reconstructed on the outskirts of the city. Located on the western edge of the regional center, the site was once a large burial mound. Archaeological excavations began here in 2008, uncovering remains of the structure that was once a bustling caravanserai, complete with lodgings, bathhouses, and essential facilities typical of these ancient roadside inns. Based on coins found at the site, the complex has been dated to the 6th–7th centuries AD.

In 2010, the caravanserai underwent a comprehensive restoration. Five-meter-high walls were erected, the interior was faithfully recreated, and Tortkul now stands as an inviting tourist destination. Since 2014, it has also operated as an open-air museum. Included in the Silk Road tourist route, this caravanserai connects Kazakhstan with historical destinations across Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan.

Amidst the numerous historic monuments in ancient Taraz, approximately 20 caravanserais can be found. Taraz was once a vital node along the Silk Road, not only flourishing in the arts and crafts but also serving as a major stopover for merchants journeying along this famed route. These caravanserais were essential waypoints, providing safe lodging and storage as well as a place to refresh before continuing the arduous journey across Central Asia.

Around the Tortkul mound stand four towers, with two pairs of eight-meter gates facing north and south. Four artisan workshops flank either side of the main entrance, creating an industrious atmosphere at the heart of the complex. Inside the courtyard, there were rooms for travelers, stables for loaded camels and horses, and ample storage for goods. Specialized guards were employed to protect caravans and their precious cargo from bandits. Over time, the site took on a defensive role, with the caravanserai’s design evolving to resemble a fortress, complete with imposing walls to ward off potential threats.

The restored Tortkul Caravanserai offers visitors a glimpse into the bustling past of ancient trade and travel, honoring the history and culture that flourished along the Silk Road.

The Tortkul Caravanserai Ethnographic Museum is located in the city of Taraz on Suleimanov Street, Zhambyl Region, Republic of Kazakhstan.
