According to Kazakh cosmology, a World River flows at the meeting point of the realms, and along its shores grows the sacred Bayterek tree. Its roots reach deep into the underworld, while its branches stretch upward, supporting the heavens. Every year, the magical bird Samruk lays an egg within the tree’s canopy, symbolizing the sun and the beginning of a new solar cycle. This egg is swallowed by the dragon Aydahar, symbolizing the cycles of the seasons, the turn of day and night, and the balance of good and evil.
In Turkestan, a colossal representation of this egg sits at the far end of the Karavansaray complex, hosting a small museum and the captivating «Flying Theater.» Tickets are 6500 tenge (in contrast, entry to the Yasawi Mausoleum is 200 tenge). Visitors are admitted on a scheduled basis in small groups, culminating in a «Flight Over Kazakhstan» experience, which is undoubtedly the highlight of the museum.
The guided tour through the rest of the museum briefly skims over the major events in Kazakhstan’s history without much detail. Museums in Turkestan can generally be divided into two types—those with a focused narrative and researched artifacts, and the newer ones, which, like this, aim more for show than historical depth. This museum, leaning toward the latter, emphasizes a show-like experience, designed to shape a specific impression in a visually engaging format.
However, the «Flight Over Kazakhstan» experience is truly impressive.
The «Altyn Samruk» Flying Theater is a media complex situated within the Karavansaray complex in Turkestan. Visitors embark on a time-travel journey guided by the mythical bird Samruk, taking them to the origins of Kazakh culture. The 8D immersion effect transports guests on a spectacular aerial journey over Kazakhstan’s landmarks. Seated securely, viewers feel every motion, gust of wind, and even the chill in the air, creating an exhilarating and almost tangible adventure. Modern virtual reality technology brings the legendary Altyn Samruk to life, soaring over Kazakhstan’s breathtaking sights, diving into the Caspian Sea, gliding over the Charyn Canyon and Kolsai Lakes, and letting visitors feel the majesty of the mountains and the open expanse of the Kazakh steppe. The experience leaves guests with lingering joy and awe.
The concept for the Flying Theater is inspired by the ancient Kazakh legend of the sacred bird Samruk, who lays its egg on the branches of the World Tree. This legend shapes the complex’s design, featuring a nest with a golden egg at its center.
Each session lasts 30 minutes, with entry scheduled every half hour (e.g., 12:00, 12:30, 13:00, etc.), accommodating up to 40 people per session.
