Opened in early April 2021, the Karavansaray, the largest multifunctional tourist complex in Central Asia, has quickly garnered significant attention from visitors. Located close to the historic-cultural reserve-museum «Azret-Sultan» and archaeological remains of an ancient karavansaray, this unique site allows tourists staying in one of its modern hotels to immerse themselves in an authentic historical setting just steps away.
At the same time, pilgrims who traditionally visit this area for its sacred landmarks can enjoy a change of pace by exploring the vibrant new Eastern bazaars and experiencing the spectacular equestrian show “Kyz Kuu,” rooted in Kazakh myths and folklore. This juxtaposition of the traditional and the fantastical is fitting, as the Silk Road was known for its array of travelers—magicians, actors, preachers, thinkers, and philosophers—all contributing to a rich and diverse cultural exchange.
Spanning 20.5 hectares, the complex offers a bustling marketplace and entertainment center featuring thrilling rides, a variety of dining options, and captivating shows. One of the main attractions is the “Kyz Kuu” equestrian performance, a dramatic showcase of Kazakh horsemanship, brought to life through stunts, puppetry, and dance to celebrate the Kazakh people’s deep-rooted bond with horses.
The complex also houses the “Flying Theater,” a unique egg-shaped building where visitors are treated to a fascinating tale about the mythical Samruk bird. Souvenirs can be purchased along the Trader’s and Craftsmen’s Street, where artisans display their creations. All buildings in the complex are connected by a canal, which serves as the stage for the nightly water show, “Parade of Boats.” This theatrical performance tells the heartfelt love story of Tolegen and Kyz Zhibek, a beloved legend of Kazakh folklore.
Entry to the Karavansaray Tourist Complex is free of charge. Visitors are encouraged to begin their tour at the visitor center to view a scale model of the complex and explore a small museum, gaining insight into the layout and history of this impressive site.
