Ai-Kul is a large high-altitude lake located within the Sarkent National Park in the Batken region of Kyrgyzstan. Nestled at the westernmost tip of the country, the lake is situated in the mountains of the Turkestan Range, which belongs to the Pamir-Alai system. The name «Ai-Kul» translates from Kyrgyz as «Moon Lake,» a nod to its crescent shape that faintly resembles a sliver of the moon. Perched at an elevation of 3,000 meters, reaching Ai-Kul is no easy feat. The difficulty of the journey is further compounded by the fact that the lake’s shores are largely composed of steep cliffs, making it difficult to fully appreciate the lake’s beauty unless viewed from the heights of the surrounding passes or from the southern side, where small streams flow into the lake.
Two tributary streams feed into Ai-Kul. The water level rises during the summer months, only to recede by winter when the lake freezes over. Ai-Kul is a true hidden gem of the highlands, captivating all who witness its beauty with its remote and awe-inspiring majesty. Its inaccessibility only adds to the allure, making it a treasure concealed in the rugged heights.
