The Imam Sarakhsi Mosque is not only the largest mosque in Kyrgyzstan but also the grandest in all of Central Asia. Officially opened in 2018, the inauguration was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Construction began in 2012, with significant financial backing from Turkey, which also supplied much of the building materials, including the granite and marble used for the mosque’s striking exterior and ornate interior. The mosque is a masterpiece of Ottoman-style architecture, heavily inspired by the famous Kocatepe Mosque in Ankara. Its central dome soars to a height of 37 meters, while the four surrounding minarets each rise 70 meters into the sky. The mosque’s vast interior can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers, and during major religious celebrations, the entire complex can host up to 30,000 people.
