The Kichi-Naryn Gorge is an exceptionally vibrant and picturesque location that deserves at least a full day to truly explore and appreciate its natural beauty.
To reach the Kichi-Naryn Gorge, head towards the town of Naryn. Upon entering Naryn, take a left at the roundabout and continue on the road for about 40 km until you reach the village of Tash Bashat. The entrance to the Kichi-Naryn Gorge is conveniently located near this village. As you approach Tash Bashat, turn left and head towards the river. The road will lead you to a bridge over the Naryn River. Cross it with confidence and continue your journey. Approximately 8–9 km further along, you will come across a second bridge, and this marks the beginning of the awe-inspiring Kichi-Naryn Gorge.
Spring is the ideal time to visit this region, as the lush greenery and vibrant scenery come to life, creating an unforgettable experience. The route is dotted with numerous small, picturesque streams that add to the charm of the journey. As you progress deeper into the upper reaches of the Kichi-Naryn, you’ll notice the disappearance of the fir trees, and the landscape’s bright green hues gradually shift to a more rugged, brownish tone with sparse streaks of green vegetation.
The area is wild and untamed, with Naryn marmots—known for their distinct whistling—scurrying along the roadside almost the entire way. When the Kichi-Naryn River, known as the «Little Naryn,» changes its name to Balgart on the map, you can take a turn westward towards the Bishkek-Torugart highway. The entire stretch from Balgart to the highway is just over 100 km.
If you wish to embark on this journey from the opposite direction, you should turn onto Balgart from the Bishkek-Torugart highway by following the signpost at this intersection.
Overall, if you decide to experience this adventure, it spans a full two days, including stops, picnics, side excursions, and other activities that make the journey all the more memorable.
Additionally, near the village of Tash Bashat lies the Maralov Bogu Reserve, where you can observe majestic deer in their natural habitat. If you have time to spare, make sure to visit this unique reserve and witness the beauty of wildlife up close.
