Mausoleum of Asaf ibn Burhiya, Osh

Asaf ibn Burhia Mausoleum, Osh

At the foot of the Sulaiman-Too mountain range, on its eastern side, lies one of the most valuable architectural and historical monuments from the 17th to 19th centuries: the ancient mausoleum that houses the remains of Asaf ibn Burhiya, the vizier of Prophet Solomon. According to the works of Muslim scholars, Asaf ibn Burhiya was the son of Prophet Solomon’s aunt and was distinguished by his piety. He possessed the knowledge of Allah’s secret 100th name, Ism-i Azam, which granted him the power to perform miracles and ensured that his prayers were always answered.

Legends narrate that Asaf ibn Burhiya himself requested to be buried at the base of the mountain. The mausoleum that currently stands over his grave dates back to the 18th century, but historical records suggest that an even older sacred structure once stood on this spot, dating as far back as the 10th to 12th centuries.

Today, the Mausoleum of Asaf ibn Burhiya is one of the oldest surviving monuments in Osh. The building is aligned with the cardinal directions, and its interior takes on an octagonal shape with sides approximately 2 meters in length. The mausoleum’s most captivating feature is its portal-domed niche, which is adorned with intricate ganch (gypsum) decorations, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and artistry. This striking embellishment adds to the overall beauty and significance of this historical site, making it a true testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage.
