Besh-Tash Nature Reserve

Besh-Tash Nature Reserve is a vast and breathtaking natural park located in the Talas mountain range. Positioned to the south of the city of Talas, it encompasses several gorges, including Besh-Tash, Kolba, Kumush-Tag, and Urmaral. The elevation of this pristine sanctuary ranges from 1,100 to 3,500 meters above sea level, offering a diverse array of landscapes.

The name “Besh-Tash,” which translates from Kyrgyz as “Five Stones,” was inspired by the five stones standing in the Besh-Tash gorge, which remain there to this day. Local folklore adds an intriguing touch to the reserve’s history, recounting the tale of five bandits who were transformed into these stones as punishment for their wrongdoings.

Established to preserve the rich natural diversity of the Talas region, Besh-Tash Nature Reserve remains a haven of untouched wilderness. The slopes of its gorges are densely blanketed with juniper forests, showcasing a landscape that has remained virtually unspoiled by human hands. In addition to the juniper, the reserve is home to the Tien Shan spruce and fir trees, enhancing its lush, green tapestry. The reserve also features eight mountain lakes, the largest of which is the picturesque Besh-Tash Lake, nestled in the gorge that shares its name.

This reserve is an ideal destination for trekking enthusiasts and those seeking an extended retreat into nature. Exploring the myriad beauties of Besh-Tash requires ample time, but every moment spent in this majestic, serene landscape is truly a rewarding experience.
