The first landmark you’ll encounter on your journey to Talas after crossing the Kazakh border is the Kirov Hydroelectric Power Station (HPP), famously adorned with a colossal image of Lenin. This Soviet-era monument stands as one of the largest of its kind, capturing a significant piece of history. The construction of the reservoir began in the 1960s and took a decade to complete. Its primary purpose is to irrigate the Talas Valley using water accumulated over the winter and spring seasons. The reservoir boasts a maximum depth of 7 meters and covers an expansive area of 20 square kilometers.
Apart from the striking blue waters of the reservoir itself, tourists are often drawn to the impressive dam, which features a monumental bust of Lenin. According to some sources, this is one of the largest sculptures of its kind in the world, making it a must-see for visitors interested in Soviet history and architecture.
If you’re fortunate, you might witness the release of water from this enormous dam. As the water thunders through the sluice gates, it creates a towering column of mist, offering a truly awe-inspiring spectacle. The dam’s grandeur and the surrounding scenery make it well worth a stop to admire and experience this iconic piece of Soviet engineering up close.
