Route in brief:

Tbilisi – Bolnisi – Dmanisi – Tsugrugasheni – Tbilisi

Embark on a captivating day trip from Tbilisi to the historic region of Kvemo Kartli, where the roots of Georgian culture and language first took shape. This immersive journey into Georgia’s ancient past reveals a side of the country rarely seen by tourists. Explore the 5th-century Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral, the oldest preserved church in Georgia, adorned with inscriptions in one of the earliest forms of the Georgian alphabet. Travel further to the remarkable archaeological site of Dmanisi, where the oldest human remains outside of Africa were discovered, changing the way we understand human migration. Admire the medieval architecture and intricately carved stonework of the 13th-century Tsugrugasheni Church. This day tour is a rare chance to uncover Georgia’s mysterious early history and enjoy a scenic and culturally rich journey into the country’s southern heartland.

Your tour begins with a morning pickup at 09:00 from your hotel in Tbilisi by our professional guide and driver. Set off for a scenic drive toward Kvemo Kartli, a region in southern Georgia filled with historical depth and lesser-known treasures. As you journey through the countryside, take in the changing landscapes—from rolling hills to rural villages that reflect Georgia’s timeless character.

Your first stop is the Sioni Cathedral of Bolnisi, constructed between 478 and 493 AD. This sacred site holds the title of Georgia’s oldest surviving church and remains a masterpiece of early Christian architecture. Here, you will view some of the earliest examples of the Georgian script, engraved into the church’s stone walls, and learn about its connection to the Sassanid Persian kings Peroz I and Kavadh I. These inscriptions are invaluable links to Georgia’s linguistic and cultural origins.

Continue your journey to Dmanisi, one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Caucasus. Walk through the site where, in 1999, archaeologists discovered two 1.8-million-year-old hominid skulls—evidence of the earliest human migration out of Africa. Our guide will explain the global importance of this find and show you the medieval ruins that once made Dmanisi a thriving Silk Road town. Note that the archaeological site is open only between May 1 and October 31.

From Dmanisi, travel 10 kilometers to your final destination: the Tsugrugasheni Church, a small but richly adorned 13th-century cross-cupola church. Marvel at the ornate stone carvings surrounding the windows and arches, as well as the remaining fragments of medieval frescoes. The church’s peaceful hilltop setting offers panoramic views and a perfect end to your historical journey.

Afterward, relax during your drive back to Tbilisi, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel in the early evening.
