Abiverd Settlement

Abiverd

The ancient settlement of Abiverd stands as one of Turkmenistan’s eight historical reserves, alongside other notable sites like Kunya-Urgench, Nissa, Merv, and Dakhistan. Nestled between Ashgabat and Mary, near the vicinity of Kushka, Abiverd’s ruins tell a story of a once-thriving city with a storied past.

Abiverd, known by various names throughout history—Baverd, Abaverd, Paart, Pavart, and Peshtak—was a prominent center in Northern Khurasan. Historical accounts describe it as «a city with fertile lands and rich crops, renowned for its splendid market and mosque.» It served as a formidable fortress, offering protection to its inhabitants against nomadic invasions. The fortress was strategically designed with a single gate facing the southwest, and at its heart stood a mosque, built in the early 15th century, adjacent to the central square.

In 652 AD, during the reign of Caliph Osman, Abiverd became a point of contention among various Arabian caliphs. Under the Abbasid Caliphate, the city was part of Khurasan and was ruled by notable dynasties including the Takhirids, Saffarids, and Samanids. However, in the 12th century, Abiverd fell to the Mongols. The city was brutally destroyed by Tulikhan, the eldest son of Genghis Khan, who dismantled its once-imposing fortifications and left it in ruins.

Archaeological studies of Abiverd reveal that the southeastern and northwestern sections of the city were home to artisan quarters. Artifacts found near the citadel, including metalwork and jewelry, indicate the presence of skilled craftsmen and jewelers. Pottery fragments uncovered in the area reflect a high level of craftsmanship, underscoring Abiverd’s significance as a major commercial and craft hub in Northern Khurasan.

Today, Abiverd presents a relatively modest landscape. The smooth contours of its ancient ruins offer a silent testament to its dramatic history, former grandeur, and luxurious past.
