The Ertogrul Gazi Mosque stands as one of the most striking Muslim places of worship in Turkmenistan. Like all structures built in Ashgabat during the period of independence, this mosque impresses with its grand size and opulent decor.
Constructed in the 1990s, the mosque is situated in the heart of Ashgabat on Azadi Street, which is why it is also referred to as the Azadi Mosque. It holds the title of the largest mosque in Ashgabat, capable of accommodating up to 5,000 people at once. The mosque is built in a Turkish architectural style and is named after Ertogrul, the father of Osman I, the founder of the Ottoman Empire.
The mosque is located in the older part of Ashgabat, nestled between the VDNH Park and a brewery. Despite its towering silhouette and overall large size, finding the mosque can be challenging as residential five-story buildings encroach upon it, partially obstructing the view. Only the minarets are visible from a distance, guiding visitors to its location.
